DESCRIPTION:Impostor Phenomenon affects individuals who are accomplished\, competent\, and intelligent. Nevertheless\, they feel like they are fooling people. Many music educators and their students believe they are intellectually fraudulent and not nearly as intelligent or competent as their peers or accomplishments suggest. These frequent and intense feelings can affect an individual’s well-being by producing anxiety\, stress\, depression\, procrastination\, and job burnout. Impostor Phenomenon\, however\, could also result in motivation and opportunities for professional growth. Through personal analysis\, this session will explore the obstacles within music education that create feelings of Impostor Phenomenon and how to persevere with daily techniques that set realistic goals.

DESCRIPTION:Stephen Price closes the series with a program featuring recently-composed works from near and far. He will perform music by beloved French-Canadian composer Rachel Laurin alongside works by Swedish composer Erland Hildèn and PLU alumnus Frederick Frahm. \nStephen “Stef” C. Price joined the music faculty at the University of Washington (Seattle) as the inaugural Paul B. Fritts Faculty Fellow and Artist-in-Residence and head of organ studies beginning in September 2023. He is in demand as a concert artist and teacher throughout the United States\, with recent solo appearances at Christ Church Cathedral (Victoria\, BC) and Loyola University (Chicago\, IL.). Stef studied at Western Connecticut State University and the Jacobs School of Music at University of Indiana\, where he earned MM and DMA degrees. He was also awarded a Fulbright fellowship to study in Toulouse\, France. Following his graduate studies\, Stef accepted a full-time position as Associate Director of Music and Organist at First United Methodist Church\, San Diego\, California (2015-17). From 2018-2023\, he was Assistant Teaching Professor at Ball State University in Muncie\, IN. \nThe concert will be livestreamed via the following link: PLU | ARTS

This is music rarely heard at this level of performance and is a can’t-miss event. \n  \nEach visionary performance of the award-winning Borromeo Quartet strengthens its reputation as one of the most important ensembles of our time. The quartet has received numerous awards throughout its illustrious 25-year career\, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant and Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award. The ensemble has been hailed for its “edge-of-the- seat performances” by the Boston Globe\, which called it “simply the best.” The BSQ has been ensemble-in-residence at the New England Conservatory and Taos School of Music\, both for 25 years\, and is quartet-in-residence at the Heifetz International Music Institute\, where first violinist Nicholas Kitchen is Artistic Director. The quartet was also in residence and has worked extensively as performers and educators with the Library of Congress and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.  \n  \nThe Verona Quartet has firmly established itself amongst the most distinguished ensembles on the chamber music scene today. The group’s singular sense of purpose earned them Chamber Music America’s coveted 2020 Cleveland Quartet Award\, and they serve on the faculty of the Oberlin College and Conservatory as the Quartet-in-Residence at Nova Scotia’s Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance. The quartet has appeared across four continents\, captivating audiences at venues such as Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center (New York City)\, Kennedy Center\, Library of Congress\, the Smithsonian Institution (Washington\, D.C.)\, and many others. \n  \nThe octet’s concert program for CMC features Dmitri Shostakovich’s Two Pieces for String Octet\, Op. 11; George Enescu’s String Octet in C Major\, Op. 7; and Felix Mendelssohn’s String Octet in E-flat Major\, Op. 20. \n  \nTickets are $39/49\, with $5 tickets available for full-time students and $10 tickets for SOU employees.
