SUMMARY:NAfME Webinar: Applied Music Transcription- Notating Recorded Music for Your School Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Today’s classrooms have an unprecedented need for authentic repertoire that resonates with students’ lived musical worlds. But what to do if sheet music for culturally responsive repertoire isn’t readily available? Building on the presenter’s recent method book publication\, this session offers a practical path\, specifically for music educators\, to turn recorded music into playable sheet music for their classrooms. Presentation content will be accompanied by live demonstrations or pre-recorded instructional short-form videos. \nThe first presentation block covers the craft’s essential technology and applications in music education. The second block then introduces a sequential transcription method\, starting with planning and outlining\, followed by notating pitch and rhythm\, and ending with the capture of additional performance detail. Finally\, the third block covers several considerations to adapt existing music\, so that it becomes playable for specific instrumentations and student arriving with diverse levels of preparation. \nFollowing the presentation blocks\, attendees are invited to share any constructive feedback or ask subject-related questions. All music educators are welcome to attend\, though the presentation focuses on applications at the high school and collegiate level.

Trained in a rich Brazilian musical tradition and guided by Monina Távora\, a disciple of Andrés Segovia\, the duo has inspired leading composers including Astor Piazzolla\, Terry Riley\, Radamés Gnattali and Roland Dyens\, while Sérgio’s original works have become central pillars of their repertoire. \nCelebrating their 60th Anniversary in 2026\, the Assads bring their Farewell Tour to the PSU Guitar Series. Their program spans folk\, jazz\, Latin traditions and masterful classical transcriptions from Bach\, Rameau\, Scarlatti\, Debussy\, Gershwin and Ginastera. A rare opportunity to experience one of the most influential guitar duos in history in an intimate concert setting.

SUMMARY:Portland State University: Guitar Masterclass with the Assad Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The Portland State University School of Music & Theater welcomes Sérgio and Odair Assad for a public masterclass featuring selected student performers. Widely regarded as one of the most influential guitar duos in the history of the instrument\, the Assad Brothers bring decades of international performance\, recording and pedagogical experience to this intensive educational setting. \nIn this traditional classical guitar masterclass\, selected soloists will perform prepared repertoire and receive individual coaching from the Assads. Instruction will focus on interpretive depth\, rhythmic flexibility\, tone production\, ensemble awareness (where applicable)\, and stylistic considerations drawn from Latin American\, Brazilian and classical traditions. Particular attention will be given to musical structure\, phrasing\, articulation and the integration of popular and folk idioms within a classical framework. \nEducated under Monina Távora\, a direct disciple of Andrés Segovia\, Sérgio and Odair Assad combine rigorous classical technique with a lifelong engagement in transcription\, arrangement\, and composition. Their work has shaped the modern guitar repertoire through collaborations with composers such as Astor Piazzolla\, Terry Riley\, Radamés Gnattali and Roland Dyens\, as well as through Sérgio Assad’s widely performed original works and arrangements. \nThis masterclass offers students and audience members a rare opportunity to observe world-class artists engage deeply with the pedagogical process—illuminating not only technical and musical problem-solving\, but also broader questions of style\, tradition and artistic identity in contemporary classical guitar performance.
