SUMMARY:NAfME Symposium: Music Education and Students with Disabilities and/or Those Living in Poverty
DESCRIPTION:Where is the field of music in special education and the care of students who live in poverty heading in the next 10 years? How can we prepare to be the best teachers possible for our students? What enduring questions remain\, and how will we fulfill the promises of an education based in equity and care for all students? As we finish our time together during this virtual symposium\, we will also ask each Zoom group to share their questions and responses to provide closure for our day. Register today. \nOrganized by Alice Hammel and Joseph Abramo. Additional presenters include Eric Bottorff\, Mara Culp\, Ellary Draper\, Kevin Droe\, and Bryan Nichols. \nThere is no fee to attend this event; however\, space is limited\, and all attendees must register in advance. A certificate of completion will be sent to all attendees based on time online during the symposium. \nRecordings will be available to registrants for one week following the symposium\, at which time they will be moved to the NAfME Academy\, which is free for NAfME members (requires a subscription).

SUMMARY:Portland Orff: Matthew Stensrud Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A Playful Mind: Powerful Procedures and Enhancing Creativity through the Schulwerk\nThere’s always a place for creation – a folk dance with a twist\, a chance to explore the xylophone\, or an opportunity to see what your body can do with one word – but pulling these ideas from our students can be challenging. Let’s go back to the Schulwerk roots of playfulness\, discovery\, and wonder as we explore these ideas and more through student-led choices\, improvisation\, risk-taking\, and more. Plus\, we’ll unearth the power of procedures and how a welcoming and inclusive space builds respectful learners and enhances the Schulwerk experience. Join us for our musical Orff journey! \nMatthew Stensrud is an internationally-acclaimed and award-winning Elementary Music and Movement Teacher and serves as President-Elect of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. He currently teaches PK-4 music and movement at Sidwell Friends Lower School in Washington\, DC. He received his Master of Music Education from George Mason University and Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music\, is an Orff Schulwerk approved Teacher Educator of Movement\, and teaches Movement Levels in New Jersey and Oregon. He was a key content contributor to the book Responsive Classroom for Music\, Art\, PE and Other Special Areas and is well-known on social media as @MisterSOrff. SUMMARY:NAfME: Move It or Lose It- Joyful Movement Activities That Foster Classroom Community
DESCRIPTION:Movement is a powerful and engaging way to bring music concepts to life in the classroom. This webinar explores how simple movement activities can be used to quickly engage elementary students while reinforcing important musical skills. Participants will learn practical strategies for incorporating movement into the beginning of class to help students internalize musical elements such as tempo\, rhythm\, and dynamics. \nDesigned especially for elementary general music teachers\, this session demonstrates how movement-based learning supports active participation and helps students physically experience music. In addition to strengthening musical understanding\, these activities encourage collaboration through partner and group work\, helping to build a strong sense of classroom community. \nAttendees will leave with a collection of quick\, easy-to-implement movement activities that require little to no preparation and can be used as engaging warm-ups or transitions. These strategies are especially helpful for teachers looking to increase student focus\, energy\, and participation at the start of a lesson.
