Turning his grief into sorrow\, Berg inscribes his heartbreaking Concerto\, sensitively performed by our concertmaster\, “To the memory of an angel”—a vivacious 18-year-old girl struck down by polio. He paints her portrait in the first movement\, and\, in the emotional heart of the Concerto\, incorporates Bach’s chorale\, “It is enough; Lord\, if it pleases you/Unshackle me.”

SUMMARY:NAfME Webinar: Bridging the Gap between Applied Voice Lessons and the Modern Choral Rehearsal
DESCRIPTION:Choral music educators are given the difficult task of building healthy vocal technique in an ensemble setting with the desired result of a healthy vocal tone. This task is only compounded by the sheer number of individuals that educators work with in every rehearsal. Many choral directors first learn to sing in their collegiate applied voice lessons and are subsequently asked to transfer these skills to the choral rehearsal. This session will provide attendees with a variety of tools to bridge the gap between these two settings. With a focus on expanding knowledge of breath\, phonation\, resonation\, and articulation\, we hope each educator will have several new ideas to take back into their rehearsals to help each of their singers discover their own voice. If music education truly begins with us as educators\, it must mean equipping our students with the knowledge of how to use their voice effectively.

DESCRIPTION:“The Baltimore Consort is one of the best period instrument ensembles around…distinguished by the absolute joyous mastery of their instruments to the degree that they can improvise at will…” Times Union\, NY \n  \nChamber Music Concerts (CMC) presents the Baltimore Consort early music ensemble on Friday\, January 30th at 7:30pm at the Southern Oregon University Music Recital Hall\, 450 S Mountain Ave\, Ashland\, OR. Purchase tickets at ChamberMusicConcerts.org or call 541-552-6154. \n  \nFounded in 1980\, the Baltimore Consort has toured the U.S. and abroad\, and often performs on such syndicated radio broadcasts as St. Paul Sunday\, Performance Today\, Harmonia and the CBC’s OnStage. \n  \nThe “rambunctious sextet” (Washington Post)\, known for their lively renditions of Renaissance tunes\, presents “The Food of Love: Songs\, Dance and Fancies for Shakespeare.” This program features their core repertory — music of the Elizabethan era — with songs and consort music from Shakespeare’s plays. Ethereal soprano Danielle Svonavec performs some of the greatest hits from the Bard’s songbook\, such as It Was a Lover and his Lass\, Where the Bee Sucks\, Full Fathom Five\, and The Willow Song. The Consort instrumentalists play sparkling arrangements of dances and consort music with their exquisite consort of instruments: lute\, cittern\, viols\, and flute. \n  \nTickets are $49/59\, with $5 tickets available for full-time students\, $10 tickets for SOU employees\, and $5 tickets for Oregon Trail Card holders. Plus\, Sibelius’ stirring The Swan of Tuonela joins this Nordic musical banquet\, inspired by scenes from Finnish mythology.
