SUMMARY:Oregon Symphony- Wagner’s Greatest Hits
DESCRIPTION:One of today’s most lauded Wagnerian sopranos\, Christine Goerke traverses stunning highlights of the composer’s operatic canon at this not-to-be missed concert. Tristan and Isolde delves into the mysteries of love and death as Isolde sings herself into rapturous oblivion. David Danzmayr also leads the Oregon Symphony in orchestral highlights from The Valkyrie and Twilight of the Gods. In the spine-tingling “Ride of the Valkyries\,” the warrior maidens ride their flying steeds as they carry fallen heroes to Valhalla; and you’ll be enthralled by Siegfried’s heroic Rhine Journey and gripping Funeral March. Surrender to the drama and passion of Wagner’s music.

SUMMARY:Oregon Symphony- Beethoven’s Eroica
DESCRIPTION:A most heart-stirring concert awaits you\, portraying vastly different approaches to grief and memory. In the “Eroica\,” grief turns into fury\, when the original dedicatee\, Napoleon\, crowns himself emperor and the enraged Beethoven now celebrates only “the memory of a great man.” From two bolts-out-of-the-blue chords to exhilarating finale\, the Symphony’s majesty and drama\, extraordinary scope\, and bold harmonies all proclaim a new era in music. Turning his grief into sorrow\, Berg inscribes his heartbreaking Concerto\, sensitively performed by our concertmaster\, “To the memory of an angel”—a vivacious 18-year-old girl struck down by polio. He paints her portrait in the first movement\, and\, in the emotional heart of the Concerto\, incorporates Bach’s chorale\, “It is enough; Lord\, if it pleases you/Unshackle me.”

SUMMARY:Southern Oregon University- Dudok Quartet Amsterdam
DESCRIPTION:“The Dudok Quartet Amsterdam was quite simply revelatory. The players’ persistent delicacy\, the freshly thought-out balances between instrumental lines\, the communication of music so familiar as something new\, all added up to a kind of musical spring cleaning that was extraordinarily energising in its effect.” The Irish Times \n  \nChamber Music Concerts (CMC) presents the Dudok Quartet Amsterdam on Friday\, January 16th at 7:30pm at the Southern Oregon University Music Recital Hall\, 450 S Mountain Ave\, Ashland\, OR. Purchase tickets at ChamberMusicConcerts.org or call 541-552-6154. \n  \nHaving first met as members of a Dutch street symphony orchestra\, the Dudok Quartet Amsterdam takes its name from renowned Dutch architect Willem Marinus Dudok. The quartet is forging a reputation as one of the most creative and versatile quartets of its generation. With its ethos of ‘sharing the heart of music\,’ the ensemble believes that chamber music is an act of friendship and play to be shared directly with audiences and is committed to crafting unique and eclectic programs that engage listeners in imaginative ways.  \n  \nThe quartet has performed at many of Europe’s major venues and festivals\, including the Vienna Konzerthaus\, Wigmore Hall\, Beethovenhaus Bonn\, De Bijloke\, Barcelona Auditori\, De Doelen\, Festspiele Mecklenburg Vorpommern\, BBC Proms\, Heidelberg String Quartet Festival and West Cork Chamber Music Festival\, as well as appearing regularly at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and Amsterdam Muziekgebouw.  \n  \nThe Dudok’s concert program for CMC features Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet in F Major\, Op. 73 and Franz Schubert’s String Quartet in G Major\, D. 887. \n  \nTickets are $39/49\, with $5 tickets available for full-time students\, $10 tickets for SOU employees\, and $5 tickets for Oregon Trail Card holders. Purchase online at ChamberMusicConcerts.org or by calling 541-552-6154. Don’t miss the pre-concert lecture at 6:30pm.

SUMMARY:NAfME Webinar: Bridging the Gap between Applied Voice Lessons and the Modern Choral Rehearsal
DESCRIPTION:Choral music educators are given the difficult task of building healthy vocal technique in an ensemble setting with the desired result of a healthy vocal tone. This task is only compounded by the sheer number of individuals that educators work with in every rehearsal. Many choral directors first learn to sing in their collegiate applied voice lessons and are subsequently asked to transfer these skills to the choral rehearsal. This session will provide attendees with a variety of tools to bridge the gap between these two settings. With a focus on expanding knowledge of breath\, phonation\, resonation\, and articulation\, we hope each educator will have several new ideas to take back into their rehearsals to help each of their singers discover their own voice. If music education truly begins with us as educators\, it must mean equipping our students with the knowledge of how to use their voice effectively.

SUMMARY:Oregon Symphony- Sibelius & Grieg
DESCRIPTION:Grieg’s beloved and unabashedly Romantic Piano Concerto\, performed by Joyce Yang\, dances and dazzles and reflects a time of personal happiness in the composer’s life. A combination of beguiling melodies and bravura fire\, it found inspiration in the rhythmic patterns of Norwegian folk dances. Maestro Danzmayr also leads Stenhammar’s Second Symphony\, a Romantic Swedish jewel not heard nearly often enough. Plus\, Sibelius’ stirring The Swan of Tuonela joins this Nordic musical banquet\, inspired by scenes from Finnish mythology.
