SUMMARY:NAfME Webinar: Tone for the Non-Guitarist Guitar Educator
DESCRIPTION:Tone is one of the top priorities for choral and instrumental music educators\, but when teaching guitar\, many do not know how to approach this topic. This presentation will guide non-guitarists toward an understanding of what a good tone is and how to produce it.   \nKevin Vigil joined the faculty of Heritage High School in Leesburg\, Virginia\, in 2005-06. In 2020\, he was chosen as the Joan C. Edwards Distinguished Professor in the Arts at Marshall University. His articles have been published in several national and international music magazines and journals. He has presented lectures for the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA)\, the Philadelphia Guitar Society\, and Yale\, James Madison\, Marshall\, and Shenandoah Universities. He currently serves as Vice-President for the Virginia Guitar Directors Association\, and Chair for the NAfME Council for Guitar Education.

DESCRIPTION:Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is an integral part of the music classroom and is important for all students. This session will give participants various activities/resources for the elementary music classroom\, and ideas for implementing SEL content areas directly into music-making.   \nChristopher Cavarretta\, a full-time public school music teacher\, is known for his dedication to music education. At PS/IS 121 in South Brooklyn\, a NEST school that promotes inclusive education\, he instructs students in general music\, beginner string ensembles\, and guitar methods. His wealth of experience includes conducting the Brooklyn Summer Camp Orchestra with the Harmony Program in 2023\, where he led instruction with students in 4th to 8th grade\, guiding them through culturally relevant and responsive repertoire. Christopher is also an assistant conductor of the premiere Litha Symphony\, a summer community orchestra.

In the “Eroica\,” grief turns into fury\, when the original dedicatee\, Napoleon\, crowns himself emperor and the enraged Beethoven now celebrates only “the memory of a great man.” From two bolts-out-of-the-blue chords to exhilarating finale\, the Symphony’s majesty and drama\, extraordinary scope\, and bold harmonies all proclaim a new era in music. Turning his grief into sorrow\, Berg inscribes his heartbreaking Concerto\, sensitively performed by our concertmaster\, “To the memory of an angel”—a vivacious 18-year-old girl struck down by polio. He paints her portrait in the first movement\, and\, in the emotional heart of the Concerto\, incorporates Bach’s chorale\, “It is enough; Lord\, if it pleases you/Unshackle me.”

The quartet is forging a reputation as one of the most creative and versatile quartets of its generation.
