SUMMARY:Pacific Lutheran University- Anat Cohen with the Pacific Lutheran University Jazz Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:The 8th Annual Joyful Noise Jazz Concert features special guest artist Anat Cohen with the PLU Jazz Ensemble and the Cassio Vianna Jazz Orchestra. \nEver charismatic\, prolific and inspired\, Grammy-nominated clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen has won hearts and minds the world over with her expressive virtuosity and delightful stage presence. Anat has been declared Clarinetist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association every year since 2007\, and has also been named the top clarinetist in both the readers and critics polls in DownBeat for multiple years running. That’s not to mention years of being named Rising Star in the soprano and tenor saxophone categories in DownBeat\, as well as Jazz Artist of the Year. In 2009\, ASCAP awarded Anat a Wall of Fame prize for composition and musicianship\, among other honors. As The Chicago Tribune has said about Anat\, “The lyric beauty of her tone\, easy fluidity of her technique and extroverted manner of her delivery make this music accessible to all.” \nHowever easy Anat makes it seem onstage\, the mastery of any great art is a long\, elusive challenge\, and she teaches the fine points of jazz and the music of Brazil to budding students across North America\, including recent residencies at Stanford\, Oberlin\, Michigan State University\, University of California-San Diego\, the Centrum Choro Workshop and California Brazil Camp. About her experiences onstage\, in the classroom or just engaging with her listeners\, Anat says: “Any day when I get to share music with people – other musicians\, an audience – feels like a celebration to me.” – Bradley Bambarger \nFor more information on Anat Cohen\, including tour dates\, music samples\, photos\, video and more\, go to www.anatcohen.com. \nTickets are available online ahead of the concert\, or at the door.  No refunds.  \nConcert will not be livestreamed.

SUMMARY:Portland Youth Philharmonic: Cadenza Series- Winter Concert
DESCRIPTION:Portland Youth Philharmonic’s Conservatory ensembles return to George Fox University for a winter concert that pairs classic orchestral drama with the voice of a rising American composer. \nThe program opens with selections from Georges Bizet’s L’Arlésienne Suites\, music originally written for the stage but now known for its brilliant melodies\, rhythmic vitality\, and rich orchestrations. These iconic movements remain some of Bizet’s most memorable and vibrant works. \nAlso on the program is Electric Beauty by Quinn Mason\, a co-commissioned work that showcases the composer’s bold\, contemporary voice. Mason’s writing blends energy\, lyricism\, and color in a way that feels both immediate and lasting—an exciting opportunity for young musicians to engage with new music. \nTogether\, these works offer a compelling mix of tradition and innovation\, performed by some of the most dedicated young musicians in the region.

SUMMARY:Southern Oregon University: Mandelring Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Chamber Music Concerts Presents the Mandelring Quartett from Germany \n“Brilliance is not a strong enough word — it’s more like an electric shock. The music transfixes the listener from literally the very first note\, electrifying heart and brain without any advance warning…the Mandelring Quartett\, under extreme tension\, heated and feverish\, is dangerously close to catching fire!” Neue Zürcher Zeitung \n  \nChamber Music Concerts (CMC) presents the Mandelring Quartett on Saturday\, March 14 at 3pm at the Southern Oregon University Music Recital Hall\, 450 S Mountain Ave\, Ashland\, OR. Purchase tickets at ChamberMusicConcerts.org or call 541-552-6154. \n  \nAudiences will be thrilled to welcome a long-time favorite\, the Mandelring Quartett\, as the four affable Germans return to the stage in Ashland for a single performance. \n  \nNamed by Fono Forum as one of the six best string quartets in the world\, the Mandelring Quartett’s expressivity and remarkable homogeneity of sound have become its distinguishing characteristics. Formed in 1983 in the German wine region in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse\, three Schmidt siblings — Sebastian\, Nanette and Bernhard — join with violist Andreas Willwohl in an approach to music that is always emotional and personal. The Mandelring Quartett celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2023. \n  \nThe Mandelring’s concert program for CMC features Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in D Major\, Op. 44 no. 1; Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet in F-sharp Minor\, Op 108; and Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet in C Major\, Op. 59 no. 3. \n  \nTickets are $39/49\, with $5 tickets available for full-time students and $10 tickets for SOU employees. Purchase online at ChamberMusicConcerts.org or by calling 541-552-6154. Don’t miss the pre-concert lecture at 2pm.
