DESCRIPTION:2018 OMEA District 4 Middle and High School Solo & Ensemble FestivalMarch 10\, 2018\, McNary High School\, Keizer\, Oregon \nEligibility\nThere is no longer a music class requirement for a student to participate in the State Solo contest\, however\, all other OSAA eligibility rules do apply. Directors must have a current OMEA membership in order for their student(s) to perform in the Solo & Ensemble Festival. (go to nafme.org to check your membership status)\nFor full OSAA State Solo eligibility requirements\, visit osaa.org. \nRegistration\n Registration is through the website: solochair.com. Please follow the instructions included with this\nletter to register your student(s) for the 2018 OMEA District 4 Solo & Ensemble Festival.\n The website will be open for directors to enter their students’ information from Monday\, January 15\,\n2018\, through Sunday\, February 18\, 2018\, at 10:00 P.M.\n You will need to know your students’ accompanist to complete the registration process.\nAccompanists must be listed on solochair.com by February 18. Do not select “TBA” or “none” if the students will require an accompanist. If an accompanist is listed as “TBA\,” the student’s performance will be scheduled when convenient for the system. If an accompanist needs to be added or changed after the registration deadline\, it is the responsibility of the director and student to find an available accompanist in the assigned time slot. Schedule changes can only be made by the District 4 Chair.\n Registration fees need to be sent to the District Chair (address at the end of this letter).\nLate Registration/Cancellation Policy\n Requests for late registrations must be brought directly to Deborah Barber\, District 4 Chair\, for approval. ONLY the contest Chair can modify the contest schedule to add students to the schedule.\n Approval for a teacher to register a student after the February 18th deadline will be considered ONLY if space is available in the specific performance category and there are no accompanist conflicts.\n A late- registering soloist or ensemble who takes a cancellation slot must pay the registration fee plus a late charge of $5.00. This fee is to be paid even if the original performer(s) paid a registration fee. It must be paid on or before the day of the festival; if not paid\, students will not be allowed to perform.\n If a soloist or ensemble cancels\, the entry fee will not be refunded. \nEntrance Fees\n The entry fee for each solo is $15.00.\n The fee for each ensemble is $15.00 plus $1.00 per member of the ensemble. For example\, a flute\ntrio is $18.00 ($15.00 plus $1.00 for each of the three students participating).\n Payment for Solo & Ensemble entries must be postmarked by February 26. Please make payment in the form of a single school or booster club check or a school purchase order for all entries from your\ndepartment. Time will be kept by the adjudicator or a room monitor\, and the performance and discussion will be\nstopped at the end of ten minutes.\n Please brief your students on proper performance apparel and etiquette.\n Performers must provide an original score for the adjudicator (please have your student number\nmeasures in the score and their performance part for ease of discussion with their adjudicator). Note that failure to have an original set of music for both the performer AND the adjudicator is grounds for disqualification from the State Solo & Small Ensemble competitions.\n *Note: IMSLP versions of music are now permitted.\nOMEA Small Ensemble State Contest\nWhen registering your students for the District 4 festival\, please indicate whether their ensemble is competing for State qualifying scores or performing for Comments Only. The handbook for the State Ensemble festival can be found at www.oregonmusic.org. It will be held on April 27\, 2018 at Pacific University in Forest Grove\, Oregon. \nOMEA Solo State Contest\nThe handbook for the State Solo festival can be found at www.osaa.org. It will be held on April 28\, 2018 at Pacific University in Forest Grove\, Oregon.\nFestival Policies\nIn order to make this a successful event\, the following policies are enforced:\n Out of respect to the integrity of the judging process\, interaction with the judge\, by parent or student\, prior to the student’s performance will not be allowed. Additionally\, only the student will interact with the judge after his/her performance\, during the allotted time. This will allow the judge to focus on the performance in a clear\, unbiased manner. Failure to adhere to this policy may result in the\ndisqualification of the student.\n Once registered\, a vocal or instrumental soloist must remain in the category for which he/she is\nregistered. \n High school soloists and ensembles may not change classifications between State Competition and Comments Only after their registration has been submitted. Please carefully consider those registering as State competitors\, making sure that their performance is prepared enough for that level of scoring.\n Middle school students do not compete to qualify for the State competition\, but earn a festival rating andhavetheopportunitytoreceivecomments. Outstandingmiddleschoolperformerswillbeselected by judges to receive an award for their exceptional performances.\n Accompanists are asked to accompany no more than 14 soloists. Directors should make certain that the accompanists working with their students are aware of this policy. ADJUDICATORS WITH A MINIMUM OF FIVE YEARS EXPERIENCE TEACHING BAND OR ORCHESTRA WITH DEMONSTRATED SUCCESS AT SECONDARY OR UNIVERSITY LEVEL WHO SUBMIT SATISFACTORY SHEETS WILL BE PLACED ON THE LISTS. ALL ADJUDICATORS MUST BE RE-CERTIFIED AT LEAST EVERY 5 YEARS TO REMAIN ON THE LIST.  \nPROVIDES USEFUL PRACTICE FOR THE EXPERIENCED OR NOVICE ADJUDICATOR \nTHE WORKSHOPS WILL INCLUDE PRACTICE ADJUDICATION AND INSTRUCTION ON THE OBDA CONCERT BAND SYSTEM. DESCRIPTION:6th Annual\nWest Salem High School Jazz Festival\nSaturday\, February 10\, 2018 \nGreetings Fellow Educators! \nWe hope you are all off to a great start this year.  We would like to invite you to join us for the Sixth Annual West Salem High School Jazz Festival\, which will be held on Saturday\, February 10\, at West Salem High School in Salem. \nWe are very pleased to announce that our guest artist for this year’s festival is Yamaha Performing Artist saxophonist Jeff Coffin.    He will be performing during our noon concert hour\, and again prior to our evening awards ceremony.  Jeff is a globally recognized musician\, composer\, educator\, and author.  He is a member of Dave Matthews Band\, a 3 time Grammy winner\, and 14-year former member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.  Jeff also fronts his own group\, Jeff Coffin and the Mu’tet\, founded the Nashville Composers Collective\, started and continues to run Ear Up Records\, has played on countless studio recordings\, has recorded multiple solo cd’s\, produces\, engineers\, and is a D’Addario Performing Artist. \nOur outstanding adjudicators include: Dan Davey\, Director of Jazz Studies at Mt Hood Community College; Ben Medler\, Director of the Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra; and Paul Krueger of the University of Oregon.  They will provide excellent feedback and a short clinic following your performance. \nWe offer a unique format that will meet the needs of your band\, no matter their level.  Bands will be grouped in similar classifications for competition.  You\, the director\, select the classification that is appropriate for your group.   Each group will have a 30 minute time slot\, which includes an on stage clinic by one of the adjudicators\, set up and break down. Please note: we also have a combo division. \nClassifications: \nHigh School Novice – little or no festival experience\nHigh School Intermediate – some experience\, developing soloists\, medium difficult charts.\nHigh School Advanced – established groups\, medium to difficult charts\, good style comprehension\, and good soloists.\nHigh School Heavy – established programs\, medium to difficult charts\, mature concept of style and mature soloists.\nOpen – Groups in this category include Arts Magnets\, Home School\, Combined High Schools\, and Independent groups.\nMiddle School Novice– little or no festival experience\nMiddle School Intermediate – some festival experience\nMiddle School Advanced– established groups\, festival experience\, developing soloists.\nHigh School Jazz Combo\nMiddle School Jazz Combo\nNon-competitive- comments only.\nAwards: \nFestival Certificates for outstanding individuals in all classes\nPlaques in each class (First through Fourth Place)\nCertificates to the outstanding individual soloist in Open\, Heavy\, Advanced\, and Combo divisions\, and to the outstanding section (saxes\, bones\, trumpets\, rhythm) in each of the H.S. Heavy and H. S. Advanced classes\nFood:  The West Salem Band Boosters will provide a wide selection of lunch and snack items\, as well as souvenir programs. \nApplication and Fees:  The cost of the festival is two hundred sixty dollars ($260.00) per band and seventy five dollars ($75.00) per combo.
