SUMMARY:Oregon Symphony: Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony
DESCRIPTION:There’s nothing like hiking across moors and encountering castle ruins to ignite the creative process—as Mendelssohn experienced it on a tour of Scotland. Holyrood Castle (where Mary Queen of Scots was crowned) inspired the mysterious mood of the Third Symphony’s opening. But the mists ultimately lift in the sunny\, lively finale. Plus\, Portland favorite Conrad Tao dazzles in Mozart’s 21st Piano Concerto\, with its slow movement once described by biographer Maynard Solomon as “an entire movement of unrelieved\, time-stopping beauty…for something just short of eternity.”

SUMMARY:Pacific Lutheran University- Anat Cohen with the Pacific Lutheran University Jazz Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:The 8th Annual Joyful Noise Jazz Concert features special guest artist Anat Cohen with the PLU Jazz Ensemble and the Cassio Vianna Jazz Orchestra. \nEver charismatic\, prolific and inspired\, Grammy-nominated clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen has won hearts and minds the world over with her expressive virtuosity and delightful stage presence. Anat has been declared Clarinetist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association every year since 2007\, and has also been named the top clarinetist in both the readers and critics polls in DownBeat for multiple years running. That’s not to mention years of being named Rising Star in the soprano and tenor saxophone categories in DownBeat\, as well as Jazz Artist of the Year. In 2009\, ASCAP awarded Anat a Wall of Fame prize for composition and musicianship\, among other honors. As The Chicago Tribune has said about Anat\, “The lyric beauty of her tone\, easy fluidity of her technique and extroverted manner of her delivery make this music accessible to all.” \nHowever easy Anat makes it seem onstage\, the mastery of any great art is a long\, elusive challenge\, and she teaches the fine points of jazz and the music of Brazil to budding students across North America\, including recent residencies at Stanford\, Oberlin\, Michigan State University\, University of California-San Diego\, the Centrum Choro Workshop and California Brazil Camp. About her experiences onstage\, in the classroom or just engaging with her listeners\, Anat says: “Any day when I get to share music with people – other musicians\, an audience – feels like a celebration to me.” – Bradley Bambarger \nFor more information on Anat Cohen\, including tour dates\, music samples\, photos\, video and more\, go to www.anatcohen.com. \nTickets are available online ahead of the concert\, or at the door.  No refunds.  \nConcert will not be livestreamed.

We have people who have been playing for years\, and just a few months. We do ask that people have a basic knowledge of their instrument. Songs are chosen in advance to give attendees time to practice. \nI’m a drummer\, do I need to bring a drumset? \nYou do not! The Jam Night is held in the Recital Hall\, and there is a complete kit setup for the drummers. \nI’m a singer\, do I need to bring a mic? \nYou do not! We will have mics here for you to use\, already setup. \nI’m a guitar/bass player\, what do I need to bring? \nIdeally\, you would bring your own guitar/bass\, amp\, cable\, and pick. However\, we are a full-line music store\, so you are able to borrow one if needed. \nI’m not sure this is the right fit for me\, can I sit in on one? \nAbsolutely! Come by and check it out\, no pressure! \nHow old do I need to be? \nWe do ask that anyone under 14 call and speak with the Education Center before booking/attending. \nI have some great song ideas\, would you consider adding them to a future Jam Night? \nAbsolutely! Email any song ideas (or other ideas) to the Education Center\, edcenter@beacockmusic.com. The songs are chosen by a panel\, and they always welcome suggestions. \nI decided at the last minute to attend\, is that ok? \nAbsolutely! You can book up until the moment of the Jam Night.
