SUMMARY:NAfME Webinar: Beyond “Just Listen More”: Practical Jazz Listening Strategies for Music Educators
DESCRIPTION:Music educators are often told that listening is the key to teaching and learning jazz—but what should we be listening for\, and how can we apply it in the classroom? This session offers practical strategies for using jazz listening to deepen understanding of style\, articulation\, feel and groove\, improvisation\, and ensemble interaction. Participants will explore specific recordings\, guided listening prompts\, and classroom-ready activities that make jazz listening accessible and meaningful for all learners. \nIn addition to helping build a stronger aural foundation\, this session emphasizes how intentional listening can foster cultural and historical awareness\, creativity\, and authentic engagement with America’s Black musical heritage. By the end of the session\, educators will be able to (1) identify key elements from jazz recordings that inform student learning\, (2) incorporate more listening-based activities into their existing teaching practice\, and (3) design experiences that foster student curiosity\, creativity\, and critical thinking through listening. \nEducators will leave with tools to help students connect what they hear to what they play\, sing\, or create—developing musicianship\, empathy\, and critical listening skills in the process. Updated and inclusive artist lists highlighting current jazz musicians—with special attention to female\, LGBTQIA+\, and Indigenous artists—will be provided. Whether directing a jazz ensemble or integrating jazz into general music\, this session will help you and your students hear the music in a whole new way. \nStephen Grindel (he/him) is a PhD student in music education at the University of Washington. His research focuses on jazz pedagogy\, improvisation\, creativity\, and music education advocacy. Previously\, he directed instrumental music at Milwaukie High School and Milwaukie Academy of the Arts in Oregon and served as Jazz Director at the award-winning Osceola County School for the Arts in Florida. As an educator and trumpeter\, Stephen specializes in teaching improvisation\, jazz styles\, and wind bands\, and has performed with big bands\, combos\, pop/funk horn sections\, pit orchestras\, and free improvisation groups. He holds degrees from the University of Oregon (MM\, Jazz Studies) and Northwestern University (BM\, Music Education/Jazz Studies). More information is available at www.stephengrindel.com.

SUMMARY:University of Portland Jazz Festival
DESCRIPTION:The University of Portland Jazz Festival showcases outstanding student musicians\, guest artists\, and clinicians from around the country\, all contributing to a vibrant celebration of jazz performance and education on our campus. Since its inception\, the UP Jazz Festival has become a premier student jazz event in the Pacific Northwest. We support a mission of excellent teaching and individual attention in an environment that fosters development of the whole person\, and our goal is to ensure that every participant leaves the festival inspired\, with a greater appreciation for the art of jazz. \nThe UP Jazz Festival features a one-day\, non-competitive\, educational format for high school and middle school bands\, with “Outstanding Soloist” awards given to students from each visiting band. We present the feature performance with our guest artist and the UP Jazz Ensemble\, as well as our guest artist’s master class\, during the day\, in order to ensure availability for visiting student groups who cannot attend an evening concert. \nThe 2026 Jazz Festival will feature performances by student ensembles\, a clinic for each participating student group\, a master class with this year’s guest artist\, trumpeter Victor Garcia\, a concert featuring the UP Jazz Ensemble with Mr. Garcia\, and an evening jam session with UP faculty and students.  \nPlease contact Dr. Don Norton at nortond@up.edu with any questions.

Orff-Schulwerk invites students to participate in music through speaking\, singing\, moving\, playing instruments\, and creating. By utilizing these Orff elements in formal performances\, we can create playful performances that include students in the creative process. In this webinar\, participants will learn how to create and organize an original music program inspired by the Orff-Schulwerk process. We will discuss how to write songs\, create movement ideas\, and involve students in this process. Additionally\, participants will understand how to pace the teaching of a full music program over multiple weeks.

DESCRIPTION:Chamber Music Concerts Presents Czech Ensemble\, Trio Bohémo \n“Precision\, dedication and a spark of magic” Aulakonzerte Göttingen \n  \nChamber Music Concerts (CMC) presents Trio Bohémo\, a Czech ensemble composed of violin\, cello and piano\, on Saturday\, March 28 at 7:30pm at the Southern Oregon University Music Recital Hall\, 450 S Mountain Ave\, Ashland\, OR. Purchase tickets at ChamberMusicConcerts.org or call 541-552-6154. \n  \nTrio Bohémo was formed in 2019\, and immediately its talent and deep musicality became apparent. They received numerous awards: first they caused a stir at the Gianni Bergamo Award in Lugano\, Switzerland\, where they were awarded second prize. Due to this success\, the trio was accepted into the “Le Dimore del Quartetto” network\, which later awarded them the prize for Ensemble of the Year 2021. In the same summer they received several special prizes at the ISA Festival in Austria such as for the best interpretations of Viennese Classical Music\, work by Bohuslav Martinů or the Czech Contemporary Chamber Music. A few days later they won first prize at the International Filippo Nicosia Award in Italy. \n  \nIn 2023 they received first prize\, prize for the best interpretation of Joseph Haydn\, and the audience prize at the International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna. The trio also won third prize and the audience prize at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition in Australia\, and they were awarded three special prizes at the ARD International Music Competition.
