DESCRIPTION:This session identifies a range of common performance challenges frequently encountered by young trombone players\, including issues related to tone production\, articulation\, slide accuracy\, and breath support. Through detailed explanations\, helpful tips\, and hands-on exercises\, the session provides practical\, accessible solutions to help students address these difficulties and make noticeable improvements in their playing. Designed to strengthen foundational skills and boost musical confidence\, this session supports both student growth and instructional effectiveness. \nLi Kuang is Assistant Professor of Music at Portland State University\, where he teaches trombone\, music theory\, chamber music\, and directs the PSU Trombone Choir. Previously\, he held teaching positions at Murray State University\, the University of Texas at Austin\, Southwestern University\, and Blinn College. An Edwards and Ultimate Brass Artist\, Li maintains an active career as a soloist\, chamber musician\, and orchestral performer\, with appearances at the International Trombone Festival\, American Trombone Workshop\, Big XII Trombone Conference\, and Jinbao Festival. He has performed with the Oregon Symphony\, Seattle Symphony\, Paducah Symphony\, and Chengdu Philharmonic.

SUMMARY:Society for Music Teacher Education Symposium on Music Teacher Education
DESCRIPTION:The registration portal for the 2025 Symposium on Music Teacher Education (SMTE) is now open! The Symposium will be held at Butler University in Indianapolis\, Indiana\, from October 23–25\, 2025. Registration includes access to all sessions\, the opening reception on Thursday evening\, morning coffee and lunch on Friday and Saturday\, and shuttle service between the conference hotel (Drury Plaza Hotel-Indianapolis/Carmel) and Butler University. \nRegistration rates: \n\n$250 General registration\n$200 Graduate student registration\n$125 Day pass for Friday or Saturday for P-12 and community partners\n\nFor the first time\, some sessions will be available for remote participation as attendees to live presented sessions\, including keynote sessions and two rooms of presentations that will be accessible via a limited access Zoom link. Virtual participation registration will be $180. \nOn Saturday evening\, an optional buffet will be held for interested attendees for $30\, payable at time of registration. \nWe ask all who are planning on attending SMTE to register by September 23\, 2025\, at which point registration fees will increase. On site registration at an increased rate will be available as well. \nFurther information regarding the Symposium can be found at the SMTE website. We look forward to welcoming you to SMTE and Butler University in October!

SUMMARY:NAfME Music Program Leaders Colloquium: Empowering Music Education Through Dynamic Partnerships
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this session is to encourage music/arts leaders to seek out partnerships in their community that will help them advance their arts programs.  \nMichelle Irvin is the Coordinator of Fine Arts and Physical Education at the Scottsdale Unified School District in Scottsdale\, Arizona. Previously she taught band and orchestra at Desert Mountain High School in the district for more than 20 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music teacher education from Northern Arizona University and holds IB Music Certification. She is a member of NAfME’s Council for Music Program Leaders.  \nNatalie Marsh serves as Director of Learning & Innovation at Scottsdale Arts\, where she brings together her expertise as an educator and her passion for community building. She holds an MA in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University\, a BFA from the University of Michigan\, and a K–12 education certificate from Eastern Michigan University. She contributes to the field nationally and locally through service on several steering committees and initiatives\, including Scottsdale Leadership\, Blue Zones Project Scottsdale\, and the US Department of Education’s Arts Integration Steering Committee.
