SUMMARY:Willamette University: Elsewhere Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Grammy-winning baritone Kenneth Overton and internationally acclaimed soprano Camille Ortiz join the Eugene-based Elsewhere Ensemble for a powerful evening of music and contemplation. Together\, they will perform Invocation – a prayer for peace\, an innovative new work by the ensemble’s violinist\, Colin Pip Dixon\, who is joined by Arnaud Ghillebaert (viola) and Kathryn Brunhaver (cello). Drawing text from activists\, mystics\, and scientists across the globe\, this hauntingly beautiful piece offers a moment of reflection surrounding one of the most urgent questions of our time: do our beliefs drive us further into violence\, or lead us toward deeper peace and reconciliation?

SUMMARY:NAfME Webinar: Promoting Music Engagement for Students with Profound Intellectual Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Of individuals with an intellectual disability\, 1% are recognized as having a profound intellectual disability and commonly present at a mental age of roughly three years or below. This session includes strategies that promote engagement for individuals with profound intellectual disabilities\, who represent a historically disenfranchised population. Accordingly\, the application of specialized curricula\, pedagogies\, and pacing strategies allows this vulnerable population to access music education to the greatest extent possible. \nThis presentation includes a clinical primer on characteristics of individuals with profound intellectual disability\, application of Fink’s taxonomy in relation to the Core Arts Standards\, analysis of the emerging model of adaptive music classes\, and a discussion of pressing issues facing educators. Implementing these strategies will position music educators to provide equitable access to music education and more effectively serve this vulnerable population of individuals.

SUMMARY:NAfME Webinar: Inclusive Curriculum Design for the K-8 Modern Music Instructor
DESCRIPTION:Public education music classrooms vary wildly depending on the school size\, location\, budget\, and resources available. Therefore\, making a one-size-fits-all music education curriculum is nearly impossible. When Christopher Cavarretta started working at a K-8 school in New York\, he was supplied only with 25 guitars\, a drum kit\, and about 25 xylophones. The primary instruction he received as a new teacher from his administration was to have all the students play instruments in some capacity while only seeing each class once a week. After reviewing various programs\, talking with mentors\, and researching resources\, he realized that the best course of action would be to design a curriculum that encourages students to grow with skills in a level-up system that challenges them to build on previously utilized instruments from year to year.

SUMMARY:Oregon Symphony: Piazzolla & Edna Vazquez
DESCRIPTION:The music of two iconic artists colors this exploration of Latin American folk traditions. GRAMMY-Award winning bandoneón player Héctor Del Curto joins the orchestra to perform Piazzolla’s “Aconcagua” concerto in the composer’s signature nuevo tango style\, a fusion of jazz\, classical\, and the traditional Argentinian tango form. Edna Vazquez brings a PNW spin to the performance\, mixing the mariachi\, Mexican psychedelic rock\, and Cuban trova styles of her youth with an edge that unmistakably hails from Portland.

SUMMARY:NAfME Webinar: Percussion Frameworks- Practical Pedagogy for the Non-Percussionist
DESCRIPTION:Many music educators are trained primarily as wind\, string\, or vocal specialists\, yet are expected to teach and develop percussionists with confidence and effectiveness. This session offers a clear\, practical pedagogical framework designed specifically for the non-percussionist teacher\, helping educators approach percussion instruction with clarity\, consistency\, and confidence. Through a structured and transferable approach\, participants will learn how to teach fundamental percussion concepts\, diagnose and correct common technical issues\, and build consistent technique across the percussion family. The session focuses on simplifying percussion pedagogy while strengthening overall ensemble sound\, improving student independence\, and supporting more effective rehearsal environments. Educators will explore a six-element pedagogical model that connects percussion technique to familiar concepts from wind and string instruction\, allowing teachers to teach through already known musical frameworks. \nParticipants will leave with practical strategies for immediate classroom implementation\, tools for improving percussion student outcomes\, and a clearer understanding of how to support balanced\, high-quality ensemble performance. This session is designed for band directors\, orchestra directors\, general music educators\, and pre-service teachers seeking to strengthen their confidence and effectiveness in teaching percussion.
