SUMMARY:NAfME Webinar: Pedal to the Metal- DIY Timpani Repair for Directors
DESCRIPTION:Fix your timpani issues without calling a technician\, if you even have one available! Designed with middle and high school band directors in mind\, this webinar equips you with the skills to identify and fix common timpani problems. You’ll lightly explore the mechanics of timpani to get a sense of how they work and then dive into troubleshooting techniques to resolve frequently seen headaches such as pedals that won’t stay in place\, malfunctioning tuning gauges\, and mystery rattles or squeaks that you just can’t nail down. As a bonus\, you’ll also learn how to clear heads to reduce those pesky overtones. By the end of this session\, you will be equipped with a literal and figurative toolbox of fixes. When you have an issue in the middle of a rehearsal\, you can walk over to your toolbox\, grab the right tool\, fix the issue\, and get back to rehearsal\, proving once again that not all superheroes wear capes.

SUMMARY:NAfME Webinar: Developing Community-Based Music Programs
DESCRIPTION:This session offers hands-on guidance for developing and sustaining community-based music programs of all sizes. Drawing on the presenter’s research and professional experience establishing programs across the country\, participants will explore the practical realities of launching and maintaining music education initiatives rooted in access\, equity\, and community engagement. The session begins with foundational planning: clarifying vision and values\, drafting mission and statements\, and outlining core instructional designs. From there\, key phases of program development are examined\, including assessing local ecosystems\, navigating business structures\, securing sustainable funding\, and addressing liability\, health\, and safety. Participants will receive tools for market research\, budgeting\, and strategies for recruiting and retaining both faculty and students\, with an emphasis on community responsiveness and collaborative leadership. In addition to best practices\, this session will also share findings from case-study research on organizational models for community schools of the arts\, highlighting characteristics of both divisional and independent structures. By the end of the session\, participants will gain insight into (1) how to create strategic program models rooted in mission\, community needs\, and instructional priorities; (2) leadership strategies that foster collaboration and shared ownership; and (3) organizational structures that align with program goals and support sustainable growth.

SUMMARY:NAfME Webinar: Breathing by Sight- Tips for All Winds
DESCRIPTION:Your sense of sight will likely serve you and your brass and wind students better than your sense of sound when journeying toward effective breathing. Experience it; observe it being taught; and incorporate it during this interactive workshop. Antonio García shares techniques both original and acquired from mentors such as Arnold Jacobs and Richard Erb to overcome his own restrictions of allergies\, asthma\, the Valsalva Maneuver\, and past bad habits. Move air in the most musically productive way! Attendees can optionally bring 16”–18” plastic bags (such a for a loaf of bread)\, wind instruments\, mouthpieces or ligatures\, or just themselves.
