SUMMARY:West Salem High School Jazz Festival
DESCRIPTION:Greetings Fellow Educators!\nWe would like to invite you to join us for the Eighth Annual West Salem High School Jazz Festival\, which will be held on Saturday\, February 8\, 2020 at West Salem High School in Salem. \nWe are very pleased to announce that our guest artist for this year’s festival is Yamaha Performing Artist\, internationally renowned jazz drummer\, percussionist\, clinician\, author\, and educator\, Steve Houghton. He will be performing during our noon concert hour\, and again prior to our evening awards ceremony. Steve has shared stage and studio with luminaries Freddie Hubbard\, Rufus Reid\, Gary Burton\, Clay Jenkins\, Shelly Berg\, Lyle Mays\, Pat LaBarbara\, Bobby Shew\, Wayne Bergeron\, Arturo Sandoval\, Joe Henderson\, Ray Brown\, and Eddie Henderson\, among others. As an author\, Houghton’s publications boast more than thirty educational books\, videos and DVDs. Houghton is Professor of Percussion and Jazz at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. \nOur outstanding adjudicators include Lars Campbell\, Director of Instrumental Music at Clackamas Community College; Jason Palmer of Portland Community College; Michelle Medler\, Director of the Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra; and James Miley of Willamette University. They will provide excellent feedback and a short clinic following your performance. \nWe offer a unique format that will meet the needs of your band\, no matter their level. Bands will be grouped in similar classifications for competition. You\, the director\, select the classification that is appropriate for your group. Each group will have a 30 minute time slot\, which includes an on stage clinic by one of the adjudicators\, set up and break down. Please note: we also have a combo division. \nIf you are an Oregon band looking for automatic qualification to the OMEA State Jazz Band Championships (by placing first in your classification with 2 superior ratings) you will need to compete in the classification that matches your OSAA classification (6A\, 5A\, 4A\, etc). However\, if you think your group will have a better experience in a lower classification\, you make qualify through the tape pool with two superior ratings. \nClassifications:\n• High School Novice – little or no festival experience (3A\, 2a\, 1A OSAA).\n• High School Intermediate – some experience\, developing soloists\, medium difficult charts (4A\nOSAA).\n• High School Advanced – established groups\, medium to difficult charts\, good style\ncomprehension\, and good soloists (5A OSAA).\n• High School Heavy – established programs\, medium to difficult charts\, mature concept of style\nand mature soloists (6A OSAA). \n8th Annual West Salem High School Jazz Festival Saturday\, February 8\, 2020\n• Open – Groups in this category include Arts Magnets\, Home School\, Combined High Schools\, and Independent groups.\n• Middle School Novice– little or no festival experience\n• Middle School Intermediate – some festival experience\n• Middle School Advanced– established groups\, festival experience\, developing soloists.\n• High School Jazz Combo\n• Middle School Jazz Combo\n• Non-competitive- comments only. \nAwards:\n• Festival Certificates for outstanding individuals in all classes\n• Trophies/Plaques in each classification (First through Fourth Place)\n• Framed certificates for the outstanding section (saxes\, bones\, trumpets\, rhythm) in each of the\nH.S. Heavy and H. S. Advanced classes\nFood: The West Salem Band Boosters will provide a wide selection of lunch and snack items\, as well as souvenir programs.\nApplication and Fees: The cost of the festival is two hundred eighty dollars ($280.00) per band and eight-five dollars ($85.00) per combo. Bands will be accepted upon receipt of completed application and payment of fees. \nThe application deadline is January 6\, 2020. No refunds will be given after January 8\, 2020. \nPlease go to http://westsalemband.org/jazzfest.registration.html\, to fill out your online registration. \nPlease make checks and P.O.’s out to West Salem Band Boosters and send to the address below\, if your school is not set up to make online payments. In case inclement weather forces us to cancel the festival\, we will provide a full refund. However\, if we are able to run the festival\, we will not provide any refunds. \nWe take pride in providing a highly organized event. An audio system with section and solo mics will be used. Risers will be provided for trumpets\, trombones\, and drums. A drum set\, vibes\, guitar amp\, and bass amp will be available on stage. You will only need to provide cymbals. \nPlease respond as soon as possible so that we may reserve a place for your band. \nThank you for your interest. We’ll see you February 8th! \nSincerely\,\nAshley Alexander\nFestival HostPlease mail application and check to:\nWest Salem High School Band\nAttention: Ashley Alexander 1776 Titan Drive NW\nSalem\, OR. 97304\nQuestions: Please contact Jaimie Hall at 360-910-5467 or mail to: alexander_ashley@salkeiz.k12.or.us.alexander_ashley@salkeiz.k12.or.us

SUMMARY:Oregon Jazz Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 2018 Oregon Jazz Festival – formerly the Lane Jazz Festival (Lane Community College) and the Oregon Jazz Celebration (University of Oregon) – brings together students\, jazz educators\, performing artists\, and jazz enthusiasts to learn from one another and to enrich each others’ experience and enjoyment of jazz. By sharing resources and facilities\, the University of Oregon and Lane Community College do even more to enhance the jazz festival experience in our community.\nOur philosophy is that jazz and music in general is by nature ”non-competitive\,” thus we are emphasizing a focus on jazz education creating a positive experience for all involved! Student performances with coaching sessions as well as technical clinics and concerts by our festival artists all serve to provide a forum for participants to learn more about jazz as we share our passion for this music. \nParticipants are encouraged to support each other as they take risks and pursue with vigor their study of jazz and music performance. To this end\, we bring together some of the very best jazz educator/artists available to instruct\, inspire\, and encourage students throughout this event. Each student ensemble is given forty minutes to perform for and receive feedback from OJF clinicians. In addition to providing comments and suggestions following student performances\, our OJF clinicians also lead clinics on various aspects of jazz performance. Finally\, our two evening concerts are designed to provide jazz students and community members the opportunity to experience live jazz in an intimate concert setting. \nFriday night’s concert in Raggozino Hall on the LCC campus will showcase 2018 Guest Artist Terell Stafford on trumpet. \nThe Saturday daytime activities will take place at the University of Oregon and will feature a variety of performances\, workshops\, clinics\, sectionals\, and a meet-the-artist session with Terell Stafford. \nOur Saturday evening concert in Beall Hall at the University of Oregon will feature several outstanding participating groups\, and the 2018 Oregon Jazz Festival guest artists/clinicians performing with the Oregon Jazz Ensemble (under the direction of Steve Owen) and the Lane Jazz Ensemble (under the direction of Joe Freuen). \nThe music faculty\, staff and students of Lane Community College and the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance are very proud of the Oregon Jazz Festival and the opportunities we have been able to provide for our community over the years. The list of past festival guests includes Branford Marsalis\, Ben Wendel\, Julian Lage\, Kneebody\, Ingrid Jensen\, Jesse Lewis\, Donny McCaslin\, Thomas Marriot\, Don Braden\, Luis Bonilla\, Rich Perry\, Dick Oatts\, John Mosca\, David Pietro\, Scott Wendholdt\, Eddie Daniels\, Marian McPartland\, Bobby Shew\, Jim Rotondi\, Eric Alexander\, Conrad Herwig\, Bob Mintzer\, Mel Brown\, and more! It is through exposure to artist-educators like these that our horizons are expanded and our potential revealed. \nWe thank you for your attendance and support and hope to see you again as the Oregon Jazz Festival continues to bring great jazz artists and opportunities to our students and our community for years to come.Steve Owen\nsowen@uoregon.edu \nPaul Krueger\nkruegerp@uoregon.edu \nkruegerp@uoregon.edu
